1. 研究目的与意义

Language is the carrier of a nation#8217;s ideology and culture. As an indispensable part of language, euphemism contains rich cultural connotation, it reflects people#8217;s values, social structure, national psychology, religious beliefs, customs and habits. Euphemism is universally used in every society, every speech community and every social class. It ensures communication to be carried successfully. A contrastive study of English and Chinese euphemism from the perspective of culture can help a better understanding of western and eastern cultures.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

As a cultural phenomenon, English and Chinese euphemism belong to different cultures, thus they have their unique features. This thesis through discussion and comparative studies on English and Chinese euphemism in values, religious beliefs and some other parts, explains the different cultural connotations behind English and Chinese euphemisms.

3. 国内外研究现状

There are so many researches on euphemism, home and abroad. In the early 1780s, English writer Gorge Blunt first coined the word euphemism, and defined it as a good or favorable interpretation of a bad word. In 1936, Menken probed into the details of how euphemism produce and become popular in The American Language. In 1981, English linguist Hugh Rawson published A Dictionary of Euphemism and Other Doubletalk, embodying years of Anglo American linguists#8217; researches on euphemism, among which are dozens of pages of the most outstanding papers. In1970s and 1980s, western linguistic theories were introduced into China. Due to the influence of these theories, some scholars began to research euphemism from the perspective of social functions. In 1983, Chen Yuan published Social Linguistics. The book has vast analysis and research about the euphemism, showing the social essence of euphemism. According to Pang Lijuan(2005), euphemism derives from the integration of social cultural factors into communicating psychology. In this article, she analyzed western cultural psychology that reflected by English euphemism, and founded that euphemism is used either for taboo,politeness, soothing,or cosmetic effect in daily life. Researches on euphemism from linguistics, semantics, etc., all have obtained the important research results. However, there are not so many comparative studies on Chinese and English euphemisms from the perspective of cultural connotations. So this paper will focus on the comparison of cultural connotations between English and Chinese euphemism.
