1. 研究目的与意义

As an important means of transformation, film and television industry makes a great contribution to the exchange of language and culture during the process of information-exchanging. Lots of foreign movies and TV series are flooded into China. However, this prosperity of film market is in sharp contrast with the marginal role of subtitle translation. The quality of subtitle translation is not so satisfying. And a translation phenomenon which is called translation cavity frequently occurs in subtitle translation. Translation cavity not only damages the beauty and purity of target language but also seriously affects the target reader''s understanding of the original meaning. So this thesis attempts to give a study of the subtitle translation from the perspective of translation cavity with the hope of making a little contribution to the further development of subtitle translation. And the examples employed in this thesis are from a famous American opera which is called Desperate Housewives.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This thesis firstly gives a brief introduction Desperate Housewives, subtitle translation and translation cavity. Desperate Housewives is a great hit on the world. It wins a great popularity among the audience based on its dramatic plot, humorous language and vivid story. The second part of this chapter discusses subtitle translation from the aspects of its definition, development and features. The third part gives a brief introduction to translation cavity. In chapter 2, major forms of translation cavity in the subtitle translation of Desperate Housewives are analyzed. The author, as a student majored in translation, researched the translation of the subtitles while I was enjoying the vivid plot and western culture and found that there were many Europeanized language in subtitling. Some of these Europeanized language are acceptable because they are faithful to the original language and can reinforce the audience''s understanding of the western culture. However, the other part of these Europeanized expressions are nonsense and do not adapt to the idiomatic usage of the target language which are commonly called translation cavity. This chapter analyzes translation cavity from the level of lexicon, syntax and discourse with typical examples cited from the subtitling of Desperate Housewives. At the lexicon level, the major forms include unnatural collocation, redundancy and word disorder. At the syntax level, the major forms include redundant long sentence; frequent employment of impersonal subject; frequent employment of #8220; 被 #8221; and the abuse of connective devices. Translation cavity at the discourse level is mainly demonstrated by the mechanical transfer of discourse structure. Based on the various forms of translation cavity, a comparative study of English and Chinese is made and suggested versions are provided. In chapter 3, the causes and influences of translation cavity in subtitle translation are discussed. The author concludes that there are three major causes for translation cavity in subtitle translation: lack of qualifications; lack of guidance of translation theory and lack of sensibility to the difference of the source language and the target language. In subtitling, translation cavity not only does great harm to the beauty and purity of the target language and drag down the quality of translation, but also profoundly affects the effective exchange of information and audiences'' understanding of the original subtitle. The audience may feel confused, misunderstand the plot or even lose their interests in the series. Chapter 4 first discusses the principles of subtitle translation which include popularity, clarity and authenticity. Based on the guidance of these principles, the strategies to get rid of translation cavity are put forward which include enhancing translator''s language accomplishment; training the consciousness of techniques, training theory-guided awareness and avoiding word-for-word translation.
