Internet memes are born with the development of the internet. They has penetrated into our life and had great influence on the way we thinking and communicating With the help from the internet, we can talk with others free from the barriers caused by geographical separation. You can communicate with someone instantly who is far away from you without delay. When interacting with others on the internet, you can not only convey meaning with the use of characters, but also express your ideas by using memes. Internet memes can satisfy users of different ages. By using internet memes, you can truly and vividly express your feelings and thoughts. That’s the reason why memes can gain popularity on the internet.

However, the same one meme has various functions used by varying individuals in different situations. What’s more, the same one person has different interpretations in various situations. With the consideration of reasons above, misunderstandings are highly possible to arise between the participants of communication. The research focuses on the meta-functions of internet memes and probes into the goals we want to achieve through the use of internet memes. By clarifying the meta-functions of internet memes, users will have a clear understanding of memes use and a proper behavior and make a contribution to the construction of civilized cyberspace.

The research focus on the language meta-functions of internet memes and is aimed at the resolution ofmisuses of internet memes.There are situations in which people fail to express themselves and express themselves inappropriately. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the meta-functions of internet memes and correcting the wrongs in the use of internet memes.

There are three kinds of memes, including memes composed of images, that made up by characters, and the combination of images and characters. After searching the database, it is not difficult to find that there have been many scholars conducting research on Internet memes. Intellectuals study it from various aspects, including culture, politics, society, economy, feminism and entertainment. There are also researches on internet memes on a linguistic base. They pay attention to the characteristics, of internet memes and social identity of users and hold that internet memes are two-edged sword.

Some foreign intellectuals pay attention to the influence of internet memes on politics. Some relevant articles have been published. Anastasia Denisova (2019) studies internet memes from the perspective of politics. The author holds that the rapid development of internet makes it possible for netizen to participate in political activity. Netizen express themselves online. What’s more, politicians have been aware of the power of internet memes and utilized them in political campaigns and propaganda. Therefore, internet memes exert an ample influence on politic. The author provide us a comprehensive definition of memes for the internet studies as “ the context-bound viral texts that proliferate on mutation and replication.”

Some intellectuals view internet memes as tools that shares some similarities with language. L. Grundlingh (2017) believes that although speech acts have mainly been discussed with reference to spoken communication, the same principles can apply to written texts and memes. Every time we use internet memes as speech acts not only to express our feelings and thoughts, but also to understand the memes we receive. The author believes that though the number of memes is definitely infinite, the number of standard memes in limited, which means memes that are popular online and are used regularly by netizen , as De la Rosa-Carrillo (2015) states. Xie Jingxian amp; Li Sujuan (2018) think that internet memes are unique language and M.A.K. Halliday’s systemic-functional grammar can be applied to the analysis of internet memes. The author analyze the ideational function and interpersonal function of internet memes and ignore the textual function of them. The author put emphasis on their interpersonal function. People who find them use the same internet memes as others do may establish relationship more quickly.
